Screening past productions

We’re digging through our archives and are excited to share recordings of some of our favourite Hull Truck Theatre productions.

Was Streamed from Monday 15 June 2020 - Sunday 21 June 2020.

Along with our co producers Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch and Oldham Coliseum Theatre we streamed the epic and landmark 2019 revival of The Hired Man.

This much loved actor-musician revival played to national critical acclaim across the country, securing three Offie Award nominations and with Lauryn Redding a finalist for Best Female Performance in a Musical. Glowing reviews included:

★★★★ ‘They play Goodall’s glorious folk-based score as if it’s pouring from their very souls.’ Sunday Express

Based on the stirring novel by Melvyn Bragg first published in 1969, The Hired Man was turned into a musical in 1984. The production features a superb score of rousing foot stomping rhythms and soaring choruses by the award-winning composer Howard Goodall (Bend It Like Beckham, Love Story).

With the support of The Really Useful Group Ltd, the premiere of the streaming will take place on Monday 15 June 2020 at 7.30pm, and will then be available for one week on the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch YouTube channel and via our website below.

Jack Lear was streamed from 6 May - 5 June.

Written by Ben Benison based on Shakespeare’s King Lear, the production was directed by Hull-born, Hull Truck Theatre Patron, Barrie Rutter who also played the title role, and featured music by folk legend Eliza Carthy. This recording was captured during a live performance with an audience at Hull Truck Theatre on 30 January 2019. It was originally streamed for free to a closed audience of patients and residents in hospitals and care homes in Hull as part of our commitment to opening up access to theatre.

“action-packed, laughter-rousing drama” The Observer on Jack Lear, 2019

“With its mentions of myth, along with the superstitions of Hull’s fishing community, this family drama has the weight of an ancient epic.” The Stage on Jack Lear, 2019

Director and actor Barrie Rutter said: “I’d like to dedicate this streaming to Ben Benison, who sadly passed away in December last year. I am sure he would be delighted, as I am, that Jack Lear will get another online outing to entertain audiences whilst we are all at home. My huge thanks to the talented cast and creative team behind the production for agreeing for it to be shared.”
