Young Company member Dmitri Colville talks about the first part of our upcoming celebration; TEN. 10 ten-minute plays, one for each year our building has been opened, all written by Hull writers. Dmitri plays Ryan in our 2009 play by Lydia Marchant that is inspired by Hull City’s promotion to the Premiere League.

To me the 2009 play is a play about the dreams and aspirations young people have. I think it captures how often young people today spend so much time thinking about what they’ll do as an adult and working towards that. The play highlights the difficult choices and sacrifices young people feel they need to make in order to make sure they achieve their goal in life.
My character Ryan is a very motivated, driven person who has known what he wants to do in life for years. To Ryan, it seems failure is not an option, he is doing everything possible to ensure he succeeds. Ryan seems to have a pessimistic view of people his age, I think he feels different to those around him who are more relaxed and who just want to have a good time. I think Ryan feels isolated at times as he doesn’t feel that people understand his ambition and the lengths he will go to, to make them a reality.
I think the 2009 play is a fantastic insight into the dreams and lofty ambitions of young people and the way it impacts their lives, relationships and world-view.
