Guts! The Musical

  • Written by Maureen Lennon
  • Directed by Tom Saunders

A community production created with Hull Maritime

The year is 1984.

15 women in a fish packing factory in Hull are about to make history...

In the decade that brought us the Walkman, MTV, chicken nuggets and shoulder pads, something else was brewing: A revolution about equal pay.

Following a dedicated Union Rep on his fight, this is a whirlwind re-telling of the groundbreaking case which changed the equalities act in the UK forever. Demanding equal pay for equal work, should be easy, right? Wrong!

This story is an important part of our city's rich maritime history, which goes way beyond the Headscarf Revolutionaries.

An upbeat and uplifting tale about justice, the power of female friendship and... fish... with a whole load of hilarity and musical joy thrown in for good measure.

Join us as the whole community come together to present this highly entertaining farcical drama which is based on a true story.

Made in Dagenham meets Barbie (The Movie).

Justice, friendship and drama – based on a true Hull story!

The search for stories from the fish factory floor

Did you work in the fish factories in Hull during the 1980’s? Or know somebody who did? If so, we need your help…

Our brand-new community production of Guts! The Musical – The Story of the Hull Fish Packers, is set to take to the stage at Hull Truck Theatre in Summer 2024 (Sat 29 June – Sat 6 July). Following Union Rep Peter Allen and 15 women from a fish packing factory in Hull, audiences are invited to enjoy this whirlwind retelling of the ground-breaking case which changed the equalities act in UK, forever.

To make this iconic local maritime story as authentic as possible, we are seeking to connect with past fish factory workers to gather as many stories as possible. They’d like to hear from people who worked in the fishing packing factories in Hull, specifically during the 1980’s.

Any contributions, insights or lived experiences shared will be explored and considered for inclusion in the play. Local playwright, Maureen Lennon, will use local stories as a basis for the story alongside some artistic license, to create a fun retelling of the iconic Hull Fish Packers.

You can submit your stories, encounters and recollections via a digital form here.

Stories are being accepted up until the 31st January 2024.

We are on the lookout for around 60 adults (18+) from the surrounding area to take to the stage and bring Guts! The Musical to life. No experience is needed! There are singing roles, non-singing roles, speaking roles, non-speaking roles, dancing roles and non-dancing roles. The only requirement is that you need to be able to attend the majority of rehearsals and be fully available for technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals and all the performance dates from Sat 29 June – Sat 6 July.

We will be holding a series of taster workshops at Hull Truck Theatre throughout February and March for anyone interested to know more about the show in an informal and relaxed environment. Dates include:

  • Saturday 10 February, 1.30pm until 3.30pm
  • Wednesday 28 February, 10.30am until 12.30pm

  • Friday 8 March, 6.30pm until 8.30pm
  • Saturday 9 March, 10.30am until 12.30pm

If you would like to get involved, you can book on to one of our taster sessions by CLICKING HERE or alternatively you can call our Box Office team on 01482 323638.

You do not have to attend the taster workshops to get involved in the rehearsals and perform in the final show. If you are not able to attend a taster workshop but would still like to take part, please register your interest by contacting our team via: community@hulltruck.co.uk

You do not need to bring anything specific to the taster sessions, but we do recommend that you bring water and comfortable clothing as there will likely be some light movement activities.
