In 1917, gifted singer Lionel Worthing, raised on the folk songs of rural Kentucky, attends the Boston Conservatory, where he meets composer David White. The pair bond over a shared love of folk music, and begin a secret romantic relationship.

After being separated by David’s service in World War I, they reunite in 1920 for a journey through Maine, recording traditional songs of rural Americans. Their winter together becomes a bittersweet testament to passion, memory and cultural preservation, shaping one another forever.
