Meet our Spotlight Partner Organisation: Hull and East Yorkshire Children's University

We recently held a coffee and cake afternoon for our Spotlight Partners, who generously donate £950 +VAT or more a year to support our programme of cutting-edge drama and inclusive community engagement.

Taking place on our first floor, representatives attended from Rollits, For Entrepreneurs Only, PDR Construction, Humberside Airport, Alessandro Caruso Architecture and Unite the Union.

Also in attendance was Natasha Barley, Director of our partner organisation, Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University. We had a chat with her to find out how the Spotlight scheme benefits this crucial charity and the children that it supports.

Hi, Natasha. First off, can you tell us a bit about the charity?

One in three children in our city grow up in poverty, with a quarter living in out of work households. Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University helps these young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them opportunities to improve their life long-term. We currently work with 66 primary schools and 6430 children during the 2017/18 school year, as well as 203 children in foster care.

Our offerings include a range of engaging learning experiences that support the National Curriculum, such as Space Scientist for a Day; Kip on a Ship, where the children get to sleep on the HMS Belfast and learn about wartime history; and a night setting up camp beneath the dinosaur at the Natural History Museum.

We also run the Letterbox Club, a unique reading programme for looked after children; Breakfast with Santa, delivered every December with the help of local businesses; and Charlie’s Surprise, Surprise, which shares joy with children who have been through difficult times.

There are so many ways for individuals and businesses to get involved with HEYCU, so we invite everyone to get in touch on 01482 466045 or email info@hullchildrensuniversity.com.

How do our Spotlight Partners help HEYCU?

Each Spotlight Partner enables 35 tickets to be donated to HEYCU to attend Hull Truck Theatre’s annual Christmas production.

Last December we brought children in foster care to see the show, which is something they’d never experienced before. They came with their carers and many were joined by their siblings, making it a wonderful day out at a very special time of year.

The calibre of Hull Truck Theatre’s Christmas production is always very high and we receive brilliant feedback from the kids. This is especially encouraging because if they engage with the arts when young, they’re far more likely to carry this on into adulthood.

We believe that all children should get to see beyond the end of their street, so the Spotlight scheme is the perfect way to show them how exciting, creative and magical the wider world can be.
