Act III Presents Sense & Sustainability at Hull Truck Theatre

14 May 2024 | In The Media

Hull Truck Theatre warmly invites audiences to come and enjoy the latest production co-created by Act III, the theatre making group for retired adults. Sense & Sustainability is a witty, thought-provoking, and uplifting comedy with community at its heart.

In the centre of a fictional down-on-its-luck northern town, next to the car park and just left of the Tesco express sits a serene garden, planted and pruned by a team of green-fingered and gossipy volunteers. But when the dark truth about the garden’s origins comes to light, the unlikely gardeners are divided: should it stay, or should it go? What do we do when the things we care about are under the microscope? And is a good thing, still good, if it comes from something bad?

Audiences will meet a range of characters over the course of the show, who will inspire with their stories, teach a thing or two about gardening and most importantly… they will leave everyone in puddles of laughter and loving gardening “big thyme”. The production will be on-stage in the Godber Studio at Hull Truck Theatre across three performances on Friday 17 & Saturday 18 May 2024.

Mark Babych, Artistic Director at Hull Truck Theatre and Director of Sense & Sustainability, said:

“Act III are a wonderful group of retired theatre makers, the eldest being in his nineties!  Everything they create is generally inspired from their own lived experiences, giving audiences a different perspective on the world and how others might see it.”

Local Hull writer Lydia Marchant (Mumsy, Eastenders) has worked with the cast to create the show. Meeting the group in Autumn 2023 to discuss the themes and content and taking inspiration from their ideas. Members of Act III expressed an interest in sharing a community group coming together, their passion for the environment and stories of hope. They were also keen to ensure that audiences had a fun night out, with lots and lots of laughter.

Lydia Marchant, Writer of Sense & Sustainability, said:

“I’ve been a huge fan of Act III’s work for many years, so it was a real honour to work with them on Sense & Sustainability. It’s a fun comedy, full of bold, relatable characters that the cast have created. It celebrates community and compassion which I am sure the audience will have as much fun watching it as we all did creating it!”

Act III meet weekly to share their stories and their passion for drama. Whether members enjoy writing, performing, directing or just enjoy learning new skills with likeminded people, Act III is a wonderful place to share ideas and make new friends.

Chris Church, Act III member, said:

“It’s lovely being able to create at Hull Truck Theatre, to work with people who are welcoming, very sympathetic, and make you feel more confident than you did before.”

Robert Spivey, Act III member, said:

“Once we are on stage and going with the flow, it is wonderful! If people clap and laugh, then you get a real buzz. We want more of that!”
