2025 Sustainability Updates

1.We’re taking part in: Talking Sustainability

We have joined forces with other cultural organisations to help test and deliver a brand new toolkit for the sector. Talking Sustainability, Indigos newest initiative for communicating sustainability to the UK arts audiences is Funded by Arts Council England.

2. For the past few months, we have been working with students from Hull University's MSc Renewable Energy and Low Carbon Solutions course on an exciting project. Three students have done an in-depth audit of our building, collected data and running various scenarios for more sustainable methods of working with the view to suggest impactful changes we can make as an organisation to move towards our goal of net zero carbon emissions.

3.During our 2025 Family Open Day, we hosted a fun, sustainability focused activity designed to help families and children learn how to use the correct bins for recycling whilst visiting the theatre. Through hands-on participation, visitors discovered simple ways to make a positive environmental impact and support our ongoing commitment to sustainability.

4.You may have noticed that over the last year we have transitioned away from producing printed programmes for our Hull Truck Theatre Productions (with the exception of our Stage 1 Christmas Show).

There are a number of reasons for this:

  1. Commitment to sustainability: By printing less paper and using less ink, we are actively contributing towards reducing our carbon footprint.
  2. Cost saving: A lot of work goes in to producing a full programme, from the design and collation of content, through to the co-ordination of print management. Unfortunately, we’ve been unable to sustain consistent sales to make this activity cost-effective with such a low number of programmes actually being sold across the course of a year.

We do however understand that audiences value the opportunity to learn more about a production and have therefore introduced a digital freesheet. This can be accessed via a QR code in the theatre’s foyer before/during/ after a performance, or by visiting our website. All cast headshots and short bios will also be available online, accessible via the dedicated show landing page. A large A0 poster copy of the freesheet is available in our foyer and printed copies of the A4 freesheet can be requested from the Box Office team. The freesheet includes information about the creative team and the cast and company involved in making the production.
