Roll up, roll up! It's all the fun of Hull Fair!
An epic spectacle with a huge cast, stunning dance and original live music, magnificently set amid the colour, light and romance of Hull Fair.
Follow the fortunes of Bert and Rose, from the moment they meet at Hull Fair in 1935, to the day Bert went back to the Fair to look for his lost love. Bert's a Hull lad, born and raised. He lives for that magical week in October, when the hum of fairground music starts and the whole of Walton Street is bathed in magic light. He loves the sights, the sounds, the smells ... And he loves Rose. Beautiful Rose. Behind the carousel, Rose and Bert make a promise to one another - a Hull boy and a girl from the fair. But it's 1935 and the world is on the brink of massive changes. Bert and Rose find themselves dealing with prejudice which threatens to keep them apart forever. Will their love survive through the years?
Hull Truck Theatre's first ever Community Play - written for and starring the people of Hull - a special commission to celebrate our 40th Anniversary. City of Light is a love letter to an event which in Hull is bigger than Christmas - Hull Fair.
There is a Post Show Discussion lead by the director Mark Rees on Friday 31st August.
