WORLD PREMIERE

April 1642. Sir John Hotham, Governor of Hull, Member for Beverley and owner of most of East Yorkshire is charged by Parliament to secure the arsenal at Hull and deny entry to King Charles I.

If only it were that simple. The citizens of Hull are demanding payment for billeting the Parliamentary troops but Sir John needs the money as a dowry for his daughter, who has fallen in love with the King’s son, the Duke of York. And that’s to say nothing of his wife, who is intent on getting her hands on the dosh and escaping with one of her many admirers.

With a Royalist siege outside the city walls and the rebellion of the mob within, Civil War seems inevitable and losing his head more than probable. Caught between two choices, Honour and Advantage, we join Sir John on frankly the worst day of his life.

The Hypocrite is a riotous comedy from award-winning playwright Richard Bean, whose hit One Man, Two Guvnors was a runaway West End and Broadway sensation, inspired by the infamous moment in Hull’s history which started the English Civil War.
