Hull Truck Theatre will hit the road again soon with a 12-week tour of Shakers - taking the company's work to thousands of its followers across the UK. Despite having just opened a £15m venue in the heart of its home city, Hull Truck remains highly commiteed to touring its unique brand of contemporary physical theatre. This is partly an acknowledgement of the company's history - it was formed in 1971 as a touring company operating from the back of a truck, hence the unusual name which lives on today, but also because touring provides a crucial source of revenue for the company. Hull Truck tours three productions each year, attracting tens of thousands of people; for example, during the last financial year, Truck's five tours were seen by almost 50,000 people and raised 19 per cent of the theatre's income, a similar percentage as generated from box office takings at its own venue.
